The Opportunity

Plastic waste is a disaster for our planet and its eco-systems. It severely impacts the planet’s atmosphere, water and soil and all the organisms that depend on them.

Global production of plastic doubled from 2000 to reach
460 million tonnes.

An estimated 9% is recycled; the rest is incinerated, put into landfill or illegally dumped.

By 2050, annual global plastic production will have tripled.

But what if…

All plastic waste could be recycled?

It could be recycled without producing dangerous chemicals and toxins?

It could be repurposed into new, useful, cost effective, commercial products (that could themselves be recycled)?

Recycling processes were safe, produced low emission and were energy efficient?

NILO’s patent-pending, scalable technology converts this problematic waste into a reusable, low-energy binding agents which are used to make safer and environmentally friendly products.

The Solution

NILO has created a binder to replace Urea Formaldehyde (UF).

UF is used frequently as a binding agent, UF possesses a high carbon footprint and off-gases at 37°c, making it so damaging for human health and the environment.

UF binders are used in thousands of applications including the manufacture of wood-based products like particle board, plywood, orientated strand board, MDF and laminated products. The European Union has draft legislation to restrict the use of UF by 20262.

How NILO works

Utilising plastic waste: NILO uses plastic waste that are not usually recycled like plastic film and post-industrial waste that normally end up in landfill or finds its way into our oceans.

Creating industrial binders: Using these plastic waste as raw material, NILO produces industrial binders/adhesives through a patented process that is clean, safe and is energy efficient.

Application: NILO’s binder is combined with wood chip to produce a particle board in a heated press. But can also be used to make MDF, OSB and Plywood.

Repurposing and commitment towards a true circular economy: NILO’s particle board can be reground as feedstock for new board production.
